Joffrey is disrespectful
The scene opens with a close-up of a dog, and then reveals several dogs laying in a stall. Other dogs nearby begin barking after a rooster begins to crow in the distance.
In the back, near a wall, we see Tyrion begin to wake up with his face cuddled up next to one of the dogs. He apparently crashed the night before in Winterfell’s dog pen.
Tyrion’s nephew, Prince Joffrey, is watching him the whole time, and then snickers at him.
Joffrey Baratheon: Better-looking bitches than you’re used to, Uncle.
At first we only see the left hand of Sandor Clegane, “The Hound,” who is standing next to the prince. Sandor is the prince’s personal body guard.
Before Tyrion can even say a word, his nephew tells him,
Joffrey Baratheon: My mother’s been looking for you. We ride for King’s Landing today.
Joffrey shows no empathy
Tyrion, now standing, points his finger at Joffrey,
Tyrion Lannister: Before you go, you will call on Lord and Lady Stark and offer your sympathies.
Tyrion then takes a piece of straw out of his mouth, and exits the pen.
Joffrey Baratheon: What good will my sympathies do them?
Tyrion Lannister: None. But it is expected of you. Your absence has already been noted.
Joffrey Baratheon: The boy means nothing to me. And…
Joffrey turns around and looks at The Hound. With a smirk on his face, he says
Joffrey Baratheon: …I can’t stand the wailing of women.
When his face turns back around toward his uncle, Tyrion gives his nephew a hard slap on the left cheek. Joffrey shrieks.
The Hound who is watching closely what is happening, does nothing to intervene. Presumably, this is a family affair. Tyrion, who wants to instill proper manners in the young prince, is within his bounds.
Tyrion Lannister: One word and I’ll hit you again.
Joffrey Baratheon: I’m telling mother!
Tyrion slaps his nephew a second time. This time using his left hand, striking the prince’s right cheek.
Tyrion Lannister: Go! Tell her. But first you will get to Lord and Lady Stark and you will fall on your knees in front of them and tell them how very sorry you are, that you are at their service, and that all your prayers are with them. Do you understand?
The prince who is distraught, glares at his uncle and slightly shakes his head no.
Joffrey Baratheon: You can’t…
Tyrion slaps his nephew one more time.
Joffrey stares at Tyrion, obviously shaken by the ordeal.
Tyrion Lannister: Do you understand?
Joffrey walks away without giving his uncle an answer.
A warning from the Hound
Sandor Clegane: The Prince will remember that, little lord.
The camera shifts its perspective and shows us the right side of The Hound’s face where it is revealed he has a scar from a severe burn.
Tyrion Lannister: I hope so. If he forgets, be a good dog and remind him. Time for breakfast…
Tyrion saunters away.
